Monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. The monarch's wingspan ranges from 3 1/2 to 4". The upper side of the wings is tawny-orange, the veins and margins are black, and in the margins are two series of small white spots. Female monarchs have darker veins on their wings while the larger males have a spot in the center of each hindwing. It is perhaps the best known of all butterflies. Monarchs are especially famous for their lengthy annual migration. In North America, they make massive southward migrations starting in August until the end of Oct., over-winter in Mexico and southern California. Northward migration begins in the spring. The length of these journeys exceeds the normal lifespan of most monarchs (less than two months in summer). It is still a mystery how the species manage to return to the same wintering spots over a gap of several generations.
