These collectives are small communities of craftspeople who live and work together and sell their wares in a community store. All the Balinese items listed in my store were purchased on a trip my mother and I took this summer which was won at a fund-raiser for the Bellevue/NYU program for survivors of torture. This is an amazing organization that helps people who hae been tortured in their home countries deal with the physical and emotional scars left by violence and enables them to become functional Americans. For example, one day my mother helped a young woman from <></>Darfur who needed help changing her baby in the bathroom. It was hard for her as the bathroom didn't have a changing table and she only has one arm. My mother was deeply affected and wanted to buy the woman an arm herself, but found to her great relief the matter was being handled much more professionally by the organization. It is an awesome program. Starting this little business is my little way of giving something back. A portion of the profits from this business will be donated to the Bellevue/NYU program.
