• The giant tortoises live only on remote islands off South America and in the Indian Ocean. They are the largest reptiles and longest-living land animals in existence today. Males are typically 500 pounds and some tortoises have lived for 150 years or more! A tortoise believed to be 176 died in Australia in June, 2006.

• The word 'galapagos' means 'saddles' in Spanish, describing the wavy, saddle-shaped shells of tortoises living in dry, low-altitude parts of the islands. At higher, moist elevations the shells have a dome shape.

• The ancestors of the Galapagos tortoises were carried from the mainland on ocean currents to the islands off Ecuador where they thrived, free from predators.

• Introduced animals nearly made the tortoises extinct by destroying vegetation and eating their eggs. Now there are conservation projects that raise hatchlings on farms until they are big enough to survive in their natural habitat.
