Frog Pendant and Leather Thong
You are bidding on a large 2.5” high 3” long Sterling Silver Frog necklace. He holds a blue gemstone between his feet. I don’t know what it is, but it looks like Amethyst in some lights but as you can see in the photo it is very blue in others. He is on a thick braided leather thong. He is solid silver and very heavy. He looks more washed out in the photos than he does in person, chalk that up to my inexperience photographing very detailed silver pieces, it is a challenge, believe you me!

This unique pendant was handcrafted at a collective of silversmiths in Celuk, <></>Bali. It was very difficult to force our recalcitrant guide to take my mother and me off the beaten path and into the small courtyards where a group of local silversmiths will operate a cooperative store, but I persevered
knew it was there I would find the treasures I sought. This is the only piece like it I brought back so don’t let it hop away!
In Bali culture, the frog represents wisdom. In their version of the classic Princess and Toad story it is given a Cinderella twist: A childless couple prays and prays for a child, and are finally rewarded with a son but lo and behold! The child is a frog. As the frog reaches manhood he dreams he will marry a princess and when he is old enough he boldly asks the king for one of his daughters in marriage. Appalled, the king had the frog killed. However the frog possessed supernatural powers (perhaps the king should have taken note of a talking frog) and destroyed all who tried to touch him. Wisely, the king relented and gave the frog his choice of the king’s daughters. The frog chose Dahawali, banished by her wicked step-mother and ugly step-sister, for his wife. After marrying Dahawali he turned into a handsome young man named Janggala. Through his powers he and Dahawali became King and Queen.

All the Balinese items listed in my store were purchased on a trip my mother and I took this summer which was won at a fund-raiser for the Bellevue/NYU program for survivors of torture. This is an amazing organization that helps people who hae been tortured in their home countries deal with the physical and emotional scars left by violence and enables them to become functional Americans. For example, one day my mother helped a young woman from Darfur who needed help changing her baby in the bathroom. It was hard for her as the bathroom didn't have a changing table and she only has one arm. My mother was deeply affected and wanted to buy the woman an arm herself, but found to her great relief the matter was being handled much more professionally by the organization. It is an awesome program. Starting this little business is my little way of giving something back. A portion of the profits from this business will be donated to the Bellevue/NYU program. Thanks for looking!

On Aug-15-09 at 10:51:02 PDT, seller added the following information:About Us: We hate when people try to price items low and make up for it in high shipping costs. We use post-consumer materials for as much of out packaging as possible and try to use as little of it as possible while still making sure our products arrive safely. This keeps our shipping costs low – the lowest on eBay in many cases – and our operation as green as we can be. It takes a little more time but we think it’s worth it for our planet and our wallets. We hope you agree.
